10 Bridal Makeup Tips from a Pro Makeup Artist

sher_bridal_feature.png

This is a go-to-guide for brides-to-be looking for tips on how to achieve the perfect makeup look for their wedding day. 1. Schedule your bridal makeup trial at least 3-4 weeks prior to your wedding day but no more than 5 weeks prior ~ The benefit of doing a trial closer to your wedding date is your skin tone & hair length will be closer to your actual appearance on the day of. If you plan on getting a tan for the big day, have a test run before your make-up trial or simply advise your artist that you expect to be a few shades darker on your wedding day.

2. Provide a few makeup references to your artist on your trial date. Select images of individuals who resemble you or have similar features as you. This includes skin tone & hair colour. Identify what it is you like about the make-up in the image and take into account that many images online have been professionally lit or retouched and won’t necessarily translate exactly how the photo looks in real life. If you go with a pro, rest assure that your artist will do his/her best to enhance your individual beauty customized to your specific features.

sher_bridal_cv-6

Above: Makeup by Sherlyn Torres

3. The best bridal make-up is simply the most exquisitely polished version of how you usually look. Discuss which features you’d prefer to enhance and show your artist a reference photo of yourself with your best personal makeup look so you’re both on the same page.

4. Optional: On your trial date, wear a white top so you can have a better idea of how your makeup will look against your wedding dress. After the trial, take a selfie in day light or in similar lighting situations you expect to have during the ceremony or reception. That way, you can see how the makeup will look in various lighting scenarios. sher_bridal_cv-5Above: Makeup by Tisa Torres

5. Set aside at least 1hr for your trial and 45mins for your full makeup application on the day of. Also, try to add a 5 minute buffer between the bridesmaids & other bridal party members’ makeup applications to allow the artist to sanitize brushes & re-organize in between.

6. Opt for natural looking false lashes that have a subtle enhancing effect. Individual eyelashes are a great option or ask your artist for a variety of natural strip lashes to try on during the trial run. There are far more options now with varying lengths that create a really natural fluttery & romantic look.

7. Focus on the most important elements of your look, such as beautiful, natural-looking skin, softly groomed brows and feathery lashes. If you get these basic factors right the rest of your make-up will fall into place. Less is more! Especially since a god chunk of photos may be taken in natural light, you’ll want to make sure your skin looks glowy and not cakey. sher_bridal_cv-4Photos left: Markus Staley • Makeup Sherlyn Torres  |  Photos right: Makeup by Tisa Torres

8. Go for long wearing makeup products. Weddings often run from morning until night and if you haven’t booked an artist for touch-ups throughout the day, request for your artist to use professional long-wearing products. Also inquire if they offer a product pick-up service for touch-up essentials for the day of.

9. Keep in mind that bridal make-up needs to have enough colour to compensate for flash photography. Although you may not be used to wearing a full face of makeup on a daily basis, you’ll want to look more a little more vibrant considering this is a special occasion. In terms of flash, ensure that your T Zone is matte - have your maid of honour or a designated bridesmaid carry a mini clutch containing a powder compact or blotting papers + a lipstick to go for touch ups throughout the day when necessary. Your wedding photographer will certainly appreciate it! And you won’t have to pay excessive amounts for photo retouching ;)

10. Lastly, It’s always better to choose a timeless, classically beautiful, non-trendy makeup look when deciding on a style. You’ll be looking back at photos from this special moment many years later so the makeup should transcend over decades.

Gigi Hadid in Toronto for #Maybelline100 Event

Last night in Toronto, Maybelline New York Canada celebrated 100 years of beauty with brand Spokesmodel and #ItGirl Gigi Hadid.

In a nod to the racing stripe on Hadid's white Smythe pantsuit, Maybelline New York Lead Makeup Artist Grace Lee penned a double-lined eye using new (July 2015) Maybelline Lasting Drama Waterproof Gel Pencil in Cashmere White and Master Precise Ink Pen Eyeliner in Black. Lashes were coated with Lash Sensational Mascara in Blackest Black and brows were combed through with Brow Drama in Blonde. Hadid's lips were topped with nude hue (Color Sensational The Buffs Lipstick in Truffle tease), keeping all focus on her gorgeous liner.

Schwarzkopf Got2B & Dial Innovations Event

Recently joined Langton PR for another fun product launch! The event was held at The Storys Building ~ A spacious, loft style room with a ton of character.

_MG_4635

The two brands showcased were Dial & Schwarzkopf's Got2B.  Both had equally exciting new additions to their roster of already sought after products.

My first stop was Dial & their latest innovations...

_MG_4630

Loved the set up of all the new offerings, amidst fresh cut flowers, complimenting the bottle packagings.  I was immediately drawn to the Miracle Oil products ~ all infused with Marula oil (known for its intensely hydrating and skin healing properties). I'm constantly on the lookout for products that won't strip my skin's depleted moisture at the height of winter, so I was delighted to see that majority of the products focused on maximizing hydration!

_MG_4604

After experiencing the wonderful array of scents, placed in shot glasses and set in front of each bottle, I stopped at the washing station to test out the Miracle oil gel. My hands felt really fresh & clean and didn't feel uncomfortably dry. The marula oil left an immediate softening effect but didn't leave a nasty film. An excellent choice of oil since marula is quite stable, meaning even after processing, it maintains a lot of its natural properties. It's also incredibly lightweight and soaks deeply into skin.

_MG_4634

Next up is one of my long time favourite brands for hair - Schwarzkopf's Got2B. After speaking to one of the reps, I was a little dissappointed to find out that one of my go to's has been discontinued :( [Cashmere Hairspray - a flexible hold spray that smelled absolutely divine]. But she re-assured me that their new additions are equally awesome with even more benefits!

_MG_4638

_MG_4641

Before lining up to the get my hair done, I met some great people, mingled a bit & made a pit stop at the DJ booth to say hello to a familiar face - DJ Lissa Monet :).

_MG_4616

She always knows how to liven up a crowd and has impeccable taste in music ~ So happy to see her!

_MG_4615

_MG_4623

The lineup  subsided at the hair stations so I decided to test out the products first hand. I rarely style my hair these days - mainly because it's super long & time consuming (really need a hair cut! lol)  It was a nice treat to be on the receiving end of getting styled & pampered :D. The stylist who took care of me also happened to be a lovely gal I met over the summer while working on a wedding gig.

_MG_4621

Thanks Isabella, for the product knowledge & lovely hair style!

_MG_4646

_MG_4647

I spent the remainder of the night meeting & mingling with fellow beauty enthusiasts and conversing with the lovely ladies of Langton PR. Also managed to snap a few candids ;):

And snuck a quick mirror selfie before taking off...

_MG_4653

Below are some photos I took at home of the hefty swag bag takeaway & it's contents...

Here are my faves from the event...and yup...they all smell wonderful!

• Got2b Mind Blowing Range ~ Formulated to speed up styling process and make at-home blow outs a breeze! Combine all three or any on their own. Pictured below (from left to right: Quick Shape Mousse, Fast Dry Hairspray & Xpress Dry Styling Spray)

Step 1 - Quick Shape Mousse reduces your blow dry time & increases style ability with its Iconic+ System Technology. The formula not only adds volume but also boosts shine. Apply to roots of damp hair before blow drying - I usually blow dry my hair upside down to lift the root area ~ this tip particularly works better on shoulder length or shorter hair. Retails for $7.99 (227g)

Step 2 - Xpress Dry Styling Spray works with damp hair as well to expedite drying process while protecting hair from heat and keeping hair from tangling while blow drying. A must for my super long, easily tangled hair! Apply to towel dried hair and blow dry using a round brush. I specifically want to test this out for stick straight styles as it boasts a sleek & ultra shiny finish. Retails for $7.99 (177ml)

Step 3 - Fast Dry Hairspray is the finishing touch. Ionic+ Power and Micro-diffuser technology offers fast drying time & flexible hold so you can run your fingers through your hair without any sticky residue. I would suggest to use this one mainly for curled styles for a flexible, crunch free & bouncy hold. Always hold hairspray 8-10 inches away from your hair to create an even spray coverage on your strands. Retails for $9.99 (340g)

_MG_4684

• Dial's Men & Women's New Range of Moisturizing Shower Gels ~ All Formulated for maximum moisture and infused with a variety of delicious & fresh scents. Pictured below (from left to right: Coconut Water & Mango, Omega Moisture with Sea Berries, Miracle Oil with caring Marula Oil, Dial for Men Fresh Reaction Body Wash. So far, I've been using the Marula Oil infused shower gel but can't wait to try the other equally yummy scented options. Also convinced my other half to try out the Fresh Reaction and he totally approves! Shower gels retail for $6.99 each (473 ml) / $3.49 for the hand washes (221ml).

Quick tip: Use a bamboo cotton based (shower gel) mitt for a comfortable scrub and the ultimate lather ~ a little on the mitt goes a long way!

_MG_4667

What are your first impressions of these products? Would you give them a try? What are some of your favourite brands of hydrating shower gels & hair styling products? Leave a comment below ;)

Vita Liberata - Product Launch at Montecito

  IMG_1030

The timing couldn't be better for the launch of Vita Liberata's latest additions. The weather has been dreadful as of late :/ and no doubt has taken a toll on most Torontonians' complexions!

Last night was especially chilly but well worth the outing :) Another great presentation by Vita Liberata founder, Alyson Hogg whom I've had the pleasure to meet last fall for the launch of her luxury self-tanning products at the Thompson Hotel ~ see products below:

10811483-1375714132-453171

Back to last night's festivities ~ This time, the event was held at Montecito Restaurant, chosen by host Langton PR and situated in the gorgeous upper floor lounge. The perfect venue to compliment the equally chic products showcased to the room full of beauty experts.

vita_lib_2

IMG_1033vita_lib122

The first product demoed is a pretty revolutionary one in the realm of bronzers. This is the first time I've been introduced to a loose mineral bronzing powder with the additional benefit of leaving a lasting tan on the skin. The tan develops over a 4 to 8 hour period and lasts 5 to 7 days! The DHA is in crystal form and gets activated by your moisturizer and or foundation.

vita_trystal

IMG_1023

I'm a big supporter of clean ingredients in makeup & skin care and this is definitely one I plan to keep in my stash! The minerals are finely milled so it goes on very smoothly ~ the ultra soft kabuki brush included in the package also helps to create a flawless finish. Another key feature is the universally flattering shade of buildable bronze that's far from the orangey hues we all try to veer away from. When applying the product, use light sweeping motions starting under the cheekbones, forehead & jawline for a contouring effect. Then apply a sheer amount all over your face and neck to create a veil of colour.

trystal

The second item of the night was another multi-tasker. A night-time moisture mask that doubles as a gradual tanner so you can literally get up and glow! The base ingredients include sunflower seed oil & shea butter which both boost the skin's resilience against drying elements along with other nourishing ingredients like vitamin e and kiwi seed oil. It's naturally scented with essential oils of chamomile & bitter orange flower oil ~ both aromatherapeutic: Chamomile calms while orange oil relieves stress and insomnia - a perfect combination before bedtime!

VITA_NIGHT_MASK

IMG_1025

IMG_1027

To sum it up, I would place both products at the top of my list of gradual self-tanners! I've already incorporated the moisture mask to my nightly routine and saw immediate benefits this morning :D I'm also excited to demo the mineral bronzer on my clients and provide them with a flawless golden look!

Many thanks to Vita Liberata for the generous swag & the Langton PR crew for having me. You guys did an awesome job hosting!

You can check out Vita Liberata at Sephora or Click HERE to view their full range of products ;)

rosewater_nightcrawler_final.png

  TIFF2014_Blog

This year, my TIFF gig was strictly confidential, hence the lack of celebrity photos. Nevertheless, it was one of my favourite jobs to date as I was able to witness some pretty exclusive actor interviews for the below noted films. Just being in the presence of such passionate, talented and dedicated actors & film makers was such an inspiration. Not to mention, the spacious and swanky suite we filmed in made the day even more spectacular ;) The footage we shot will be included in the DVDs -or- Bluerays when the films are officially released.

Design Exchange - Politics of Fashion

Last night, my makeup buddy Amanda & I attended a DXTalks Event entitled “Designing Public Image”…

The panel included top editorial hair & makeup artist, Tony Masciangelo, portrait photographer Christopher Wahl, multi-media fashion entrepreneur Jeanne Beker & Flare fashion director Tiyana Grulovic. They each shared equally interesting topics and experiences (both personal & industry related) with regards to public image evolution throughout the decades, as well as other controversial topics pertaining to fashion & politics.

Post talk, we got to explore the latest exhibition, guest curated by Jeanne Beker entitled “Politics of Fashion | Fashion of Politics”. Which was a pretty stellar collection of fashion pieces & images, including a short film by top fashion photographer Nick Knight, featuring supermodel Naomi Campbell.

Fun times with the creative team at Four Seasons Hotel for the launch of Dine Magazine’s Fall 2014 issue. The atmosphere at Aria, located on the third floor of the hotel, is whimsical to say the least and of course the food was impeccable just as I expected. Really enjoyed collaborating with this editorial team and couldn’t be happier with the final product ;)

Les Ateliers - "Dream Up" by The BHD

les_ateliers_feature.png

Dream_up_BHD

Spent a lovely afternoon with beautiful & inspiring women last Sunday at Les Ateliers' premiere event, “Dream Up”, designed & hosted by Daniella of The BHD. I know this event has been in the works for sometime & I couldn’t be happier with how everything turned out. I’m so proud of D for putting together such a well rounded event complete with usable intro gifts as soon as you step in ~ a beautiful notebook & balmain pen for taking notes during the presentations…

She had smart, entertaining & informative speakers, ice cream sandwiches from Coco & Cowe, a delicious 3 course lunch on the scenic rooftop of The Spoke Club, an interactive photo-booth experience by Buick, complimentary nail bar & makeup touch ups via YSL Beauty! So many more highlights like the amazing giveaways & prizes announced during lunch + the giftbags handed out as the event wound down.

I was also happy to see lots of familiar faces and like-minded women who all embody the ideal BHD woman ~ transparent enough to reveal their broken heel moments ~ simultaneously strong and independent enough to move on regardless of adversities, while still able to empower others along the way.

Bernadette Mora - Fashion Magazine Editor

bernadette_feature.png

  tumblr_n7ctmqJVSW1qbx4pfo1_r1_1280.png tumblr_n7ctmqJVSW1qbx4pfo2_r1_1280

It was amazing to have Bernadette Morra in front of my makeup brushes this week! Being that she’s an editor-in-chief of a top publication, Fashion Magazine, I was nervous  to have a possible discerning customer. Lucky for me, the opposite was true ~ She was far from fussy and was such a lovely host :)

After getting a peak at her beautiful dress, she pretty much gave me free range to come up with a look that would compliment her ensemble. The dress was designed by celebrated Canadian designer, Lucian Matis, featuring Aleks Antonijevic’s fine art ballet photography.

I incorporated some classic staples from Stila’s extensive collection along with some new items to create her evening look.

She has healthy glowing skin so it was a breeze to work on her complexion. I used a mix of Stila’s Stay All Day Foundation & Concealer for lasting flawless coverage.

She usually likes to play up her lips with bold colours but I decided to make her eyes the focal point based on the palette I selected. I still added a touch of colour on the lips but kept it subtle so as not to overpower the eyes.

I’m happy to report that she loved the final look!

Before Bernadette headed to the National Ballet Gala, I snapped a quick iPhone photo of her full look using natural light.

tumblr_n7ctmqJVSW1qbx4pfo4_r2_1280.png

What I used…

Face:

1. Stila Face the Day Gel Moisturizer  |  2. Stila CC Cream in Fair & Tone  |  3. Stila Stay-all-day Foundation & Concealer in Light & Tone  |  4. Stila Self Adjust Coral Blush

Eyes:

5. Stila In the Light Palette eyeshadows & Damsel Smudgestick Liner

Lips:

6. Stila Stay-all-day Vinyl Lip Gloss in Nude

Tools fom left to right:

7. #33 Foundation & Concealer  |  #24 Powder & Blush  |  #30 & #20 Eyes & Lips

Caitlin Kenny - Flare Mag Beauty Editor

caitlin_anna_sui_feature.png

  tumblr_n4trdd5C2J1qbx4pfo2_r2_1280

I had the pleasure of beautifying Flare Magazine Beauty Editor, Caitlin Kenny, for the 9th Annual Canadian Fragrance Awards last Friday.
I incorporated some new items from Anna Sui & Stila’s extensive collections along with some classic staples to create her evening look.
She has beautiful glowing skin so it was a breeze to work on her complexion. I used Stila’s Stay All Day Foundation & Concealer for a lasting flawless coverage.
She likes to play up her eyes so I made her vibrant blue eyes pop with a dark bronze/maroon smokey eye then added lots of highlights using my fave champagne shade from Anna Sui.
I paired her sultry eyes with a beautiful & subtle pink #300 lipstick (also from Anna Sui) and of course topped that off with the coveted lip coat for extra longevity.
Caitlin already has extra long lashes so falsies were not required! However, Anna Sui’s lash amplifying mascara definitely emphasized her lashes to the max! :)
The finishing touches were Stila’s Stay all day liquid liner & Anna Sui’s pretty Rose cheek colour in #301. I snapped a quick iPhone pic of Caitlin’s final makeup look sans the hair style.
Hope you like!

Got booked to do Key Makeup for a Fashion Show @ The Burroughes building. It was for a really cool line called Moose and Beaver ~ lots of wonderful knitwear, re-purposed fur & leather with great silhouettes…

We kept the makeup fairly neutral with more focus on eyes - a browny, bronzy smokey eye with natural toned lips to compliment the show pieces. Here’s some behind the scenes snapshots via my iPhone and Runway shots courtesy of Ming Siu at tofashionistas.com
