Winter Woes ~ Skin Care Routine

Words by Cassandra Campbell / Edited by Sherlyn Torres / Photos: Elle & Allure Mags aya_jones_winter_skin_blog The cold beginning of winter is not just a sign that Christmas is fast approaching (just in case y’all forgot), it also means its time for a skin care routine change up!

The cold harsh weather tends to be even more demanding on our skin at this time of the year. The frigid weather leaves the skin dehydrated, chapped and highly irritated.

To help alleviate some of the havoc the winter is wreaking on your skin here are a few tips to get your routine up to par.

Before we get into actual product recommendations it’s important to remember that having a good basic skin care routine in place is still strongly advised. This means cleanser, toner, serum, moisturizer, eye cream, spf (in the day), specialty mask (1-3x week) and, an exfoliator (1-3x a week) of your choosing.

Rare Digital Art is a High End Retouching Boutique Based in New York City. Phone 212-960-3143

The biggest emphasis for winter will definitely be your serum, moisturizer, eye cream and exfoliator.

Remember a serum has smaller molecules so it is able to bring the hydration further into the skin.

Your moisturizer helps to lock in the serum and gives surface hydration. Get a moisturizer that is ‘heavier’ than your summer moisturizer. When you apply it to the skin it should feel pretty hydrated.

Recommendation: Laneige hydration trial pack. It’s an amazing value for a skin care starter set. It's water based so it will help combat the appearance of dehydration.

laneige_winter_skin_blog

As the eye is still the most delicate area on the face do not skip this step. Age shows here first. One word, actually two - crow's feet, yikes!!

Recommendation: Caudalie Premier Cru Eye Cream – great for hydration, dark circles, puffiness and wrinkles

caudalie-premier-cru-eye-cream-3-selling-depar

Exfoliation can make or break your skin care routine. If you over exfoliate, the skin will become thin and dehydrated. If you don’t exfoliate the keratinized (dead) skin cells may not come off quickly enough to allow the products you apply on the skin to penetrate properly. Making most of your skin care routine not effective. Did I mention exfoliation brings you one step closer to radiant skin, who doesn’t love looking radiant?!

Recommendation: Peter Thomas Roth Peel Fx – Multiaction enzymes, glycolic & ahas that gently roll away dead skin cells when massaged into skin

peter_thomas_roth_winterskin_blog

A tip for multiple layer product application is to apply each layer sparingly as they will build on each other.

Below are a few more product recommendations that you may want to try during the cold winter months...

Finally, adding a facial into your routine every 4-6 weeks would really help to give you the results you are looking for. Not only are facials a great way to relax, they all have a purpose. It’s kinda like going to the mechanic they tune up your car but it’s the maintenance that you put in after your trip to the mechanic that determines how well your car continues to work. (*if you don’t like this one you can use this analogy*- It’s like going to the dentist for a clean and fill, after the appointment you still have to brush and floss to maintain good oral hygiene, its really the same concept.) Estheticians are there to get you started on the right track but if you skip home care you’re wasting your money.) In an effort to combat dry, dull skin try getting a customized facial from a professional. You will notice an instant difference in the way your skin looks and feels.

Mid Summer Skin Care Tips

sher_skin_feature_img.png

  best-new-pore-products-00-thumb-3

Words by Cassandra Campbell / Edited by Sherlyn Torres / Photos: Vogue & Allure Mags

Summer is finally in full swing, so here are a few essential skin care items & tips that will help keep your skin looking its best!

Step 1: Cleanse

Effective cleansing is important because it removes makeup, oils and other impurities. I recommend cleansing twice daily. However, some people prefer just a quick rinse in the morning and cleansing at night. Determine what works best for your skin type!

  • Find a mild cleanser that does not strip your skin and works well with your skin type. Sulfate-free options are always a good bet!

Step 2: Exfoliate

Depending on your skin type and your age, exfoliating 1-3 times weekly will help give the skin a natural radiance.

  • Exfoliators gently remove dead layers of skin that often make the skin’s tone and texture appear dull and lack luster. Use exfoliants with rounded beads to avoid scratching your skin!  A clarisonic exfoliating brush can also do wonders :)

6a00e54ef96453883401b7c6cacee8970b-800wi

Step 3: Tone

Toning is the underdog of a good skin care routine. It is a step that is often skipped simply because the importance of this step isn’t highlighted enough.

  • Toner is applied after cleansing or rinsing the skin
  • It rebalances the skins pH, essentially creating an even playing field for the rest of your products to be absorbed

Step 4: Serum

I can’t stress enough how fabulous and amazing serums are! A serum is lighter than a moisturizer and more potent.

  • Penetrates the skin faster to deliver the benefits and nutrients almost immediately
  • Super lightweight, the skin does not feel heavy with product
  • Apply before a moisturizer

Step 5: Moisturize

Now that the weather is a lot warmer and there is more moisture in the air, using a lighter moisturizer will be better for your skin.

  • Gel formulas are great because they are light weight and soothing to the skin
  • Another option is a lotion, lotions are lighter than creams. They typically come in a more liquid form.

Check out my previous post on Spring & Summer Skin Care HERE for product suggestions

Step 6: Eye Cream

Eye cream is amazing because it helps to add moisture to the most delicate feature on your face. Why not take care of the one feature people look into on a regular basis?

  • Choose an eye cream that is beneficial to your needs
  • Apply a small amount using your ring finger (has the least amount of strength)
  • Tap gently from the outer eye to the inner eye (this method helps to reduce premature crows feet)

sunday-morning-detox-skincare-anais-mali-matt-jones_vogue

Step 7: SPF (Sun Protection Factor)

This is the most important step of all. In the summer everyone loves enjoying the sun and working on their tans (at least I know I do). It is a common misconception that using sun protection will stop you from tanning, this is a myth. You will still get a tan; you are just practicing good sun exposure etiquette.

  • Pick something with broad spectrum = UVA (Ultra-violet Aging) and UVB (Ultra-violet Burning)
  • Sunblock reflects the rays off the skin
  • Sunscreen absorbs the rays into the skin
  • Apply at least 30 minutes before heading out into the sun
  • It is strongly recommended to reapply every 2-3 hrs for maximum protection
  • Try to avoid being in the sun between the hours of 10am – 3pm
  • A higher SPF is not always better, try sticking to an SPF of 40 or lower, the added chemicals in the higher SPF’s create a sense of false protection
  • Sun damage can take up to 10 years to appear on the skin (thank me later)

Check out my previous post specific to Sunscreen HERE for SPF suggestions ;)

I hope this article has been helpful and beneficial! Having a good skincare routine will benefit you in the long run. Tailor your routine to the season; ideally all of your products should be replenished every 3 months if you are using them twice daily. There is nothing wrong with having a few skincare favourites in rotation, just make sure you are giving your products a fair chance to work.

A Beauty Feature: #MyMaskeraide with Sherlyn Torres

sher_maskeraide_feature.png

A recent interview by one of my go-to beauty brands ~ Maskeraide....Check it out below...

#MYMASKERAIDE WITH SHERLYN TORRES

We caught up with some of our MaskerAide customers and fans and asked them a few questions about MaskerAide and how it fits into their fabulous lifestyle. We'll be spotlighting great people around the globe, in different industries and with different lifestyles, in a new blog feature called #MyMaskerAide

MEET SHERLYN

Initial thoughts on MaskerAide?

When I first saw MaskerAide’s packaging, my immediate thought was “this is really cute!” I love the convenience of having each sheet in a separate sachet which makes it very travel friendly and the fact that all of them are hydrating!  After trying the DETOX DIVA & BEAUTY REST'ORE, I was very pleased with how smooth my skin felt! Hydration is a must for my dry skin type and the added benefits the afore-mentioned sheets have are just icing on the cake.

How does MaskerAide ‘fit’ into the ‘SHERLYN TORRES’ life + work life?

Being a makeup artist requires me to be organized and on-the-go on any given day of the week. Late nights on set & early call times the next day doesn’t leave much time for me to do multi step beauty routines. That being said, having MaskerAide sheet masks on while I prep my kit and wash my brushes the night before a shoot really helps to cut my beauty routine time in half.

Which of our 6 MaskerAide sheet masks is your fave + why?

Living downtown means I’m constantly exposed to toxins and pollution in the air and both the DETOX DIVA & BEAUTY REST'OREsheet masks really come in handy when it comes to fighting free radicals while simultaneously keeping my skin hydrated and glowing at the end of a long day.

People of all professions, all over the world love MaskerAide. Have you or would you recommend MaskerAide to any of your clients? industry peers? If so, why?

I certainly have and will continue to recommend MaskerAide to my clients & friends. I usually recommend it to brides the night before their wedding day to ensure their skin is smooth & prepped for a long day of makeup the next day. I also suggest it to models and music industry pros who are constantly put through long days on set & on-stage performances  wearing all sorts of makeup. These sheet are heaven-sent for last minute calls to photoshoots & early morning press junkets to help restore their skin’s glow.

Last Question - What are you up too next? where are you travelling to?

I’m currently working on growing my side business called Beauty Inc which is an extension to my artistry but encompasses multiple artists providing makeup & hair services to larger groups of clients for special occasions / events, etc. I’ve also recently partnered up with a professional image consultant & portrait photographer on an upcoming independent makeover series called Project YOU where we will be selecting lucky individuals who may be in a rut with their beauty routines & wardrobe game and need a boost for a good cause. We want to feature individuals who truly deserve a makeover but also have an empowering story.

10 Bridal Makeup Tips from a Pro Makeup Artist

sher_bridal_feature.png

This is a go-to-guide for brides-to-be looking for tips on how to achieve the perfect makeup look for their wedding day. 1. Schedule your bridal makeup trial at least 3-4 weeks prior to your wedding day but no more than 5 weeks prior ~ The benefit of doing a trial closer to your wedding date is your skin tone & hair length will be closer to your actual appearance on the day of. If you plan on getting a tan for the big day, have a test run before your make-up trial or simply advise your artist that you expect to be a few shades darker on your wedding day.

2. Provide a few makeup references to your artist on your trial date. Select images of individuals who resemble you or have similar features as you. This includes skin tone & hair colour. Identify what it is you like about the make-up in the image and take into account that many images online have been professionally lit or retouched and won’t necessarily translate exactly how the photo looks in real life. If you go with a pro, rest assure that your artist will do his/her best to enhance your individual beauty customized to your specific features.

sher_bridal_cv-6

3. The best bridal make-up is simply the most exquisitely polished version of how you usually look. Discuss which features you’d prefer to enhance and show your artist a reference photo of yourself with your best personal makeup look so you’re both on the same page.

4. Optional: On your trial date, wear a white top so you can have a better idea of how your makeup will look against your wedding dress. After the trial, take a selfie in day light or in similar lighting situations you expect to have during the ceremony or reception. That way, you can see how the makeup will look in various lighting scenarios. sher_bridal_cv-5Above: Makeup by Tisa Torres

5. Set aside at least 1hr for your trial and 45mins for your full makeup application on the day of. Also, try to add a 5 minute buffer between the bridesmaids & other bridal party members’ makeup applications to allow the artist to sanitize brushes & re-organize in between.

6. Opt for natural looking false lashes that have a subtle enhancing effect. Individual eyelashes are a great option or ask your artist for a variety of natural strip lashes to try on during the trial run. There are far more options now with varying lengths that create a really natural fluttery & romantic look.

7. Focus on the most important elements of your look, such as beautiful, natural-looking skin, softly groomed brows and feathery lashes. If you get these basic factors right the rest of your make-up will fall into place. Less is more! Especially since a god chunk of photos may be taken in natural light, you’ll want to make sure your skin looks glowy and not cakey. sher_bridal_cv-4Photos left: Markus Staley • Makeup Sherlyn Torres  |  Photos right: Makeup by Tisa Torres

8. Go for long wearing makeup products. Weddings often run from morning until night and if you haven’t booked an artist for touch-ups throughout the day, request for your artist to use professional long-wearing products. Also inquire if they offer a product pick-up service for touch-up essentials for the day of.

9. Keep in mind that bridal make-up needs to have enough colour to compensate for flash photography. Although you may not be used to wearing a full face of makeup on a daily basis, you’ll want to look more a little more vibrant considering this is a special occasion. In terms of flash, ensure that your T Zone is matte - have your maid of honour or a designated bridesmaid carry a mini clutch containing a powder compact or blotting papers + a lipstick to go for touch ups throughout the day when necessary. Your wedding photographer will certainly appreciate it! And you won’t have to pay excessive amounts for photo retouching ;)

10. Lastly, It’s always better to choose a timeless, classically beautiful, non-trendy makeup look when deciding on a style. You’ll be looking back at photos from this special moment many years later so the makeup should transcend over decades.

Spring Summer Skincare Swap

Now that spring has finally sprung in Toronto and we've gotten a taste of what's to come this summer, it's time to re-think our skin care regimes!  Especially when it comes to moisturizing - Even though temperatures are rising, if you're at least 20 years of age & up, it's still important to keep skin well hydrated during the spring & summer. As we shed our winter garments, we should also switch up our skin hydrators to lighter-weight lotions, gels & whipped creams that absorb quickly & won't feel heavy on our skin during warmer weather. The products I've chosen to feature below are a great range of moisturizers that are ideal for warmer days ~ Some contain added benefits which also combat harsh elements our skin encounters during the summer, such as pollution. I'll be doing a separate post on Sunscreen infused hydrators next month or you can check out my previous post on UV friendly products HERE. Leave a comment below to let me know which brands *you prefer to use when warmer temps roll around ;)

S/S 2015 Runway Makeup Trends

Below are some of my favourite makeup trends off the runway from select top designers' Spring/Summer 2015 fashion shows...

I love the overall minimalistic approach the artists took with pops of colour and minor focal points. I've always been a fan of clean makeup with a slight bit of edge. Some looks were borderline bare which will be a definite relief in the hot summer months.

I'm personally looking forward to sunkissed skin and rocking minimal looks with just liner or bold lips. Share your thoughts below to let me know which ones you'd be willing to try ~ I'd be glad to suggest products that work best for your coveted look ;)

“Say goodbye to your little zit”

Date: The morning of your date with the cutie from work

Time: 7:00 a.m.

Setting: Your washroom

Scene: Your alarm goes off. You stumble towards the washroom with your eyes half closed... After washing your face, you squint into the mirror to find a bright red zit living on the tip of your nose!

The coward thing to do: Hide under the covers until the zit goes away.

The hero thing to do: Scour your beauty stash & treat it!

Step 1: Use a mild (sulfate-free) cleanser infused with an anti-bacterial agent, like tea tree oil.

Step 2: Run a q-tip under warm water and dab onto pimple to open up the pore.

Step 3: Use the other end of the q-tip to dip into your spot treatment* and apply onto zit.

• Go for a treatment with B vitamins, tea tree oil, salicylic acid or purifying clay. If you have none of the above, a dab of seabuckthorn oil can do wonders! (just keep it very minimal)

Next…Camouflage it! (if you opted for clay, be sure to rinse off first)

Step 1: Go for a lightweight moisturizer that is free of heavy oils - dermalogica's active moist is a great one to have on hand.

Step 2: Apply light layers of concealer with a small synthetic brush to cover up the imperfection. Be sure to use a patting motion and go for an acne treatment infused formula to continue the healing process.

Step 3: Set with a mineral-based loose powder so the concealer stays put. *Bonus: The zinc from the mineral powder is also an anti-inflammatory ingredient, which will keep redness at bay.

By end of day, hopefully the blemish would have shrunk significantly so you won't have to skip out on your date ;)

Comment below to share some of your tips for maintaining a clear complexion and which products you swear by...

The Down Side of Sunshine - Sher Beauty Tips

darkside_blog_products_feature.png

  Picture 2

We’re at the mid point of summer and by now I’m sure you’ve had your share of fun in the sun!

One thing people may not think about while soaking up those rays is the long-term effects extended sun exposure has on our skin such as wrinkles, sun spots and worse, melanoma :(.

Although most people wear SPFs these days, and many are familiar with the terms UVA / UVB, not everyone knows the meaning behind the  acronyms.

SPF ~ Stands for Sun Protection Factor

• The higher the SPF the better. Since the number represents the theoretical amount of time you can stay out in the sun without getting sunburned. E.g. SPF 20 would allow you to stay in the sun 20 times longer than you could without protection ~ meaning if your skin reddens within 15mins of sun exposure without sun block, you can stay in the sun for about 300 mins with an SPF 20 given that it hasn’t washed of.

UV ~ Stands for Ultra Violet Rays

• A good way to remember UVB is to associate the B with Burn. These rays affect the upper layers of the skin, activates melanin production and causes the skin to burn when exposed to the sun for too long. Note: SPF only applies to sun protection factor for UVB rays.

• I associate the A in UVA to Aging. These are the longer rays that affect the deeper layers of our skin ~ the damage shows up on the surface many years later. E.g. wrinkles & age spots.

That being said, it’s important to get a really good sunscreen with a high SPF that shields you from both UVB and UVA rays. Although the SPF number won’t determine the protective factor for UVA rays, many natural based sunscreens contain ingredients like Zinc & Titanium dioxide that create a physical block which prevents UVA rays from penetrating. And of course opt for waterproof if you’ll be engaging in water related sports and activities ;)

If you want to avoid the sun altogether but still long for a glowing golden skin tone, then go with Sunless Tanners as an alternative. There are so many new ones on the market in various intensities that either work gradually over a few days, instantly within an hour or washes off when you want.

If your skin is already showing signs of cumulative sun exposure, such as wrinkling or dark spots, there are also products that help minimize the damage.

sun_care_blog_productsI have to confess that even though I’ve learned a lot of this info working in the beauty industry, I’ve been guilty of not wearing sunscreen religiously :/ but when I do, these are some of my faves in the sun care category:

• Before Sun:

1. Coola Cucumber Mineral Sunscreen  /  2. Coola Mimosa Spray Sunscreen Sport  /  3. Elizabeth Arden Lip Balm with SPF 15

• After Sun:

4. Hampton Sun Aloe Mist  /  5. St. Tropez After Sun Lotion  /  6. Hampton Sun After Sun Moisturizer

• Sunless Tanners:

7. St. Tropez Bronzing Lotion  /  8. St. Tropez Bronzing Mousse  /  9. St. Tropez Gradual Face Tan

• Post Sun Damage:

10. Clinique Dark Spot Corrector  /  11. Kora Luxurious Rosehip Oil   /  12. Mela-D Pigment Control

Stila Cosmetics - Special Delivery

tumblr_n54p5aEA311qbx4pfo1_r1_1280Complexion perfection ~ Your Summer Guide to Flawless Skin!

Another day, another castle…

Received another gracious shipment from one of my fave makeup brands ~ Stila Cosmetics!

Below is my personal take on the products & how I use them in my pro kit and on my clients…

Haven’t worked with the CC creams much so it’ll be fun to incorporate them into my work a little more. They’re specially formulated to colour correct skin tones hence the CC initials ~ Ironically coined & created by a few other cosmetic brands in the industry after the BB (Beauty Balm) craze ;)

stila_brushes

Last but not least, the tools that help distribute all of the above products evenly are oh so important in achieving a flawless finish. I regularly rave about the #33 one-step complexion brush since it emulates your fingers when applying foundation, highlight & contour without leaving streaks.

Also love the #24 illuminating powder brush! It gives an almost airbrush effect with it’s perfectly tapered soft bristles.  I truly enjoy using Stila’s double-ended multi-tasking brushes ~ saves me time having a brush on both ends while working in a fast paced environment. The brushes are also re-enforced multiple times on the handle so I’ve never experienced lost bristles.

So much more to discuss on brushes alone so I’ll do a separate post on various uses & my ultimate faves from different lines!

I’ve been using my Clarisonic Mia 2 for about a month now and I’ve definitely noticed a difference in the texture of my skin!

One thing I determined, is the biggest change occurs within the first few uses.

As previously noted, the kit came with four different brush heads: delicate (pale blue base), sensitive (b&w bristles with white base), normal (grey base) & deep pore cleansing (blue & white bristles on a white base).

I immediately started using the ‘deep pore’ cleansing brush…I’m a frequent exfoliator so I figured my skin could handle it! But I may have jumped the gun a little cuz the tops of my cheeks got slightly red after the 4th use :/ On the positive side, I *did notice that my skin was much smoother with less dry patches :)…

I switched to the ‘normal skin’ brush head on my 5th use which felt very much like the ‘deep pore brush’ - it’s still quite coarse so be sure to dampen the brush with luke warm water before using ;). I also switched my face wash to Dermalogica’s fragrance free cleansing gel - The one that came with the package was geared specifically for oily skin and my skin veers more towards normal to dry in the winter. After 1 week, my skin was still fairly smooth & glowy :)

The second week was a little different. I think my skin started purging which caused a bit of bumps on my forehead, cheeks & chin >.< - A friend who owns one mentioned this may happen in the 2nd or 3rd week of regular use so I knew it was a bound to occur!

I’ve just completed my 4th week of use and the bumps have started to go away - definitely less dull in all areas and less dry patches overall.

Pros:

~ I saw fast results which means I can use it on clients prior to makeup application & see an immediate difference in their skin

~ The patended sonic technology really works to give a squeaky clean feel & smooth finish to the skin - there was no dirt or makeup residue left on my face after swiping a cotton pad soaked in toner

Cons:

~ The battery needs to be regularly charged as it looses power within 6-8 uses

~ The bumps that may arise after a couple weeks of using. This may not happen to all but it’s possible if you don’t go for regular facials - that would be me! :S

Overall I would recommend this ultra cleansing / exfoliating machine because:

• It helps brighten a dull complexion

• You’ll no longer need granular exfoliants which can contribute to or worsen enlarged pores

• It can save you time & money since it’s fairly equivalent to getting a microdermabrasion facial at a spa

Last Tips:

* Be sure to use a suitable cleanser for your specific skin type Try: Dermalogica’s (fragrance free) gel cleanser or Purity by Philosophy if you have dry, sensitive skin

* After a few weeks of twice a day use, switch to once a day for maintenance if you have ultra sensitive skin. Otherwise, you can always switch to a softer brush head (e.g. the delicate brush) to continue a twice a day ritual ;).

Occasionally I'll receive products from brands for testing. Well, this product couldn’t have come at a better time! I’ve been suffering from winter ravaged skin that could really use some recouping right about now.

The package included the following…

Inter-changeable brush heads depending on skin type or condition:

• Normal Skin

• Delicate Skin

• Sensitive Skin

• Deep Pore Cleansing

• Clarisonic Handle

• Case for Handle

• Cleansing gel
